South Street Renaissance Revisited – Gallery Opening Reception

Join us for the opening reception of our new exhibition, South Street Renaissance Revisited, at the South Street District Office gallery space. In partnership with the South Street Headhouse District and Drexel University’s Atwater Kent Collection, this exhibit explores the origins of what has become Philadelphia’s funkiest street.

For much of the early 20th century, South Street was a thriving commercial corridor where working-class and immigrant families built businesses and community side by side. That changed in 1955, when Philadelphia’s proposed Crosstown Expressway cast the neighborhood into decades of uncertainty, disinvestment, and decline. Yet that same uncertainty created space for artists, activists, entrepreneurs, and longtime residents to come together and fight for the street’s future.

South Street Renaissance Revisited highlights this transformative era and the people, businesses, and cultural forces that shaped South Street’s remarkable revival.

The opening reception will take place on Friday, May 22, 2026 from 6-8PM, with refreshments and cookies kindly donated from Famous 4th St Delicatessen.

Opening Remarks begin at 6:30PM, starting with the Drexel team who organized the exhibit, followed by members of SSHD’s History Committee.

The exhibition will remain on view through December 5, 2026.
