For the past 91 years, the Easter Promenade has been a staple in Philadelphia and a tradition for many families. Originally starting in Rittenhouse Square, the Promenade moved to South Street in the 1980s where it became a #MeetMeOnSouthStreet staple. Today, the Promenade is one of the longest running traditions in the city of Philadelphia. There are attendees that have been coming to the event their whole lives, and many continue to bring their family every year!

“Some of my fondest memories of South Street are attending the Promenade with my family. Creating outfits for this event became a big source of pride for my mom who would hand-make our coordinating family outfits. And she was, of course, even prouder the few years that we won! I’m so glad this tradition is continuing with a new audience!” said Shannon Maldonado, owner of SSHD business YOWIE.

The 91st anniversary is an opportunity for family and friends to start new traditions on South Street. A star-studded cast of local celebrities, judges, and live performers will join the strut down South Street. Free bunny ears will also be available to those joining the crowd. Attendees can also participate in a mini South Street Egg Hunt before and after the event!

The Promenade ends at Headhouse Plaza, where the Best Dressed Contest takes place. Fashion enthusiasts of all ages, genders, and styles are encouraged to celebrate the day by showing off their most extravagant spring-themed costumes. Hundreds of children, families, and pets enter the contest in hopes to win prizes in categories including:

  • Best Dressed Child – 5 & Under
  • Best Dressed Kid – Ages 6-12
  • Best Dressed Adult – Ages 13 & Over
  • Best Dressed Family – Two or four legs!
  • Best Spring Hat – Show us your best cap, bonnet, fascinator, or high-fashion headwear!

Prizes for the Best Dressed Contest will be gift cards for local businesses including Moon + Arrow, The Philly Game Shop, Partners and Son, Philadelphia Magic Gardens, and Eye’s Gallery. All Best Dressed Contest participants will also receive candy goodies from our sponsor, Frankford Candy. Professional photographs of the Best Dressed Contest will be made available for free download after the event on the South Street Headhouse District’s Instagram.

“We are delighted to host the 91st Annual Easter Promenade, and all are invited to join us in strutting down South Street to celebrate this grand Philadelphia tradition! Hop into the rhythm of South Street’s rich history and vibrant future this Easter. Come out and show us your best spring fashion!” said Eleanor Ingersoll, South Street Headhouse District Executive Director.

This event would not be possible without the support of SSHD’s 400+ small businesses, as well as sponsors Frankford Candy, TarketPark USA, and Carr & Duff. Additional thanks to our community partners Federal Donuts, Philadelphia Union, Popcorn for the People, Specialty USA, Spread Bagelry, and Woolly Mammoth.

For anyone looking to compete in this year’s contest, South Street is the perfect place to pick up new pieces for your spring wardrobe, including spring dresses and suits, new-to-you vintage flair, a fresh pair of kicks, as well as fabric to make your own outfit! Before the Promenade kicks off, attendees are encouraged to grab brunch at one of South Street’s delicious restaurants. Afterwards, attendees can take a stroll around the district to discover a mini South Street Egg Hunt, and shop at the hundreds of unique stores the district has to offer.
