Reece Farness’ “Artist Talks” — 3rd Street Gallery
When: Saturday, July 16th, 3pm
Where: 3rd Street Gallery, 610 S. 3rd Street
Reece Farness “Phlash”
This show features a variety of tattoo flash designs I’ve made since I arrived in Philly about 3 years ago. Sheets like these are commonplace in tattoo shops and the designs are either used directly as tattoos or as inspiration for an adaptation by the artist.
I’ve had a lot of fun putting together these different series, primarily as practice in different subject matter and a way to fill the gaps in my work schedule. I also find it difficult to focus on a single direction in my work, be it subject matter or stylistic choices, so tattoo flash lets me indulge in that.
Much of old flash was quick and dirty, arguably the more sensible way, as the designs were meant to be refined when tattooed. These days people are pretty meticulous about it, myself included.
With that in mind, I thought to bring this fairly commonplace practice of flash production by tattoo artists into a gallery setting. Hopefully it can be seen up close by some who might not have otherwise.
