Artist Members’ Group Show “Identity and Community” — 3rd Street Gallery

When: Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays, gallery hours vary (appointments also available)
Where: 3rd Street Gallery, 610 S. 3rd Street

3rd Street Gallery’s Artist Members’ group show “Identity and Community” opens on Friday, July 22, and will run through Sunday, August 21.

Philadelphia has the identity of a rough-and-tumble, even a “Gritty” community.  The Flyers hockey team were once known as the “Broad Street Bullies,” and “passionate” Philadelphia fans give both opposing and home teams a hard time—even Santa was subjected to booing!  The film Rocky celebrates Philadelphian’s “grit” and tenacity. However, Philadelphia’s identity is more complex.  There is the identity that includes elegant Georgian, Neo-Classical, and Victorian architecture. It is a historical city, the place where the Country was founded with the signing of the Declaration of Independence.   Philadelphia is also known for its arts, both performing and visual. It boasts music from its world class orchestra, to jazz, and the Mummers strutting and playing on Broad Street every New Year’s Day.  Philadelphia’s visual art identity includes the multi-generational Calder Family, one of the largest collections of pubic are in the U.S., and the largest collection of Rodin’s art outside of Paris.  The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Foundation, along with venerable art education institutions such as Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), Moore, and Tyler, and the many art galleries leave one in no doubt that the arts are an integral to the identity of the Philadelphia community.

In its August Group Show Identity and Community, the artist-members of 3rd Street Gallery explore the role of the arts in the identity of Philadelphia as a community.  What is the role of visual art in a community?  Is art for everyone in the community or only a select few?  With our strong identity as an artist-owned and run cooperative Gallery, what role does 3rd Street Gallery play City’s arts community?  How does each members’ identity and visual language shape the identity of the 3rd Street Gallery community?  The members of 3rd Street Gallery invite you to come and see our visual conversation on identity and community.

3rd Street Gallery is an Artist-Owned and Run Cooperative of local area artists.  They’re located at 610 S 3rd Street.
Gallery hours: Fridays, 4:00—8:00 p.m., Saturdays, 12:00—7:30 p.m., and Sundays, 12:00-4:00 p.m. For appointments, email [email protected]. Please visit 3rdstreetgallery.com for more info!
