The South Street Headhouse District is located on South Street, between Front and 11th Street, and along numbered streets from Lombard to Bainbridge Street, and down 4th Street from Lombard to Christian Streets.
The Historic Headhouse Square Shambles is located on 2nd and Pine, and the popular Lombard Street Fountain is adjacent at Lombard and 2nd Streets.
Here are some suggestions for getting here from different areas in—and outside of—Philadelphia. While you may find these helpful, if you need something more detailed it’s best to first get directions from Google Maps.
No matter what brings you to South Street, be sure to leave yourself extra time to eat, shop, and explore.

From New Jersey:
If you’re close to any of the numerous PATCO Speedline stops, it’s a quick trip into Philadelphia and South Street. Head toward Philadelphia, and get off at the 8th and Market stop. Once you’re back above ground, walk South on 8th – traveling in the same direction as traffic – and it’s about a 15-minute stroll to South Street. If you don’t feel like walking the whole way from the subway station, you can take the #47 bus south down 8th Street to South Street.
From Northeast Philadelphia:
If you’re close to the Market-Frankford Line, take it toward 69th Street and get off at 5th and Market. From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk to South Street. When coming up from the station, head south, either against the direction of traffic on 5th Street or with traffic on 4th Street. If you don’t feel like walking the whole way from the station, you can walk one block to 4th and Market Street and catch the #57 bus going south (toward Whitman Plaza), and hop off at 4th and South.
From North Philadelphia:
From the Temple Campus (or anywhere near Broad Street), hop on the Broad Street Line and get of at the Lombard-South stop. From there, head east (with traffic) to get to the shopping and dining district. You can also take the #40 bus from Broad—but it really isn’t a far walk.
If you’re starting out east of Broad Street, you can also take the #57 bus and hop off at 4th and South.
From West Philadelphia:
If you’re traveling from University City, the easiest way to get to South Street is by taking the #40 bus toward 2nd and Lombard. You can get off on any intersection between 11th and Front Street.
You can also take the Market-Frankford Line (toward Frankford) and get off at the 5th Street Station. From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk to South Street. When coming up from the station head south, either against the direction of traffic on 5th Street or with traffic on 4th Street. If you don’t feel like walking the whole way from the station, you can walk one block to 4th and Market Street and catch the #57 bus going south (toward Whitman Plaza), and hop off at 4th and South.
