South Street Sounds is an audio tour of the musical history of South Street from Doo-Wop to Punk to Rock & Roll.
Over the decades South Street has been home to some of Philadelphia’s most influential musicians and venues.
The Tour includes stops at JC Dobbs Bar, (3rd & South), where rock and roll found its roots, to Zipperhead , (4th & South), when punk rock ruled, to Fluid Nightclub, (4th & Kater), where the DJ’s kept the party going all night, to Grendel’s Lair, (5th & South) the club that had it all, the Theater of the Living Arts, (4th & South) where the show still goes on,
and of course no tour would be complete without a stop for the anthem of South Street by the Orlons (2nd & South).
To hear all the stops on the tour you can dial 215-310-5072.
The Tour is made possible by a grant from the Jane’s Walk Foundation and by the South Street Headhouse District.
The audio for the tour was recorded at WXPN studios by DJ Robert Drake.
