Message from SSHD Board Chair
For those of who don’t know me, I’d like to introduce myself. I am Elena Brennan (owner of BUS STOP shoe boutique) and the newly-elected Chair of SSHD. I’d like to start by wishing everyone a Happy New Year! We kicked off the year with a Hall of Fame induction of four notables that have served the district well. The honorees were announced during our State of the Street happy hour which was kindly hosted by The Society Hill Playhouse with delicious food provided by local restaurants. The four honorees were Deen Kogan of the Society Hill Playhouse, Judy Buchsbaum of Marmelstein’s, Harold Paul of S. Paul & Son’s Fabric and Abner Silver, the late owner of Jim’s Steaks, as well as Robert Perry of Tattooed Mom being awarded the Spirit of South Street Award. Thank you to all & congratulations!
Two projects that were started last year and that are now nearing completion are the LED lights & tree plantings on South Street, and the lighting project on Fabric Row. I would like to thank everyone for their patience while the construction was going on. The crews were able to complete the work quickly & efficiently, thanks to the weather being on our side!
2016 is going to be another good year, with many exciting festivals, events, beautification projects in the works, as well as Philadelphia hosting the Democratic National Convention from July 25-28.
Everyone is more than welcome to attend our monthly board meetings, held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 9am at Old Pine Community Center and I encourage board members and local businesses to join at least one of our committees – Marketing, Events, District Improvements/Business Development and Finance.
Stay tuned as more news is announced in upcoming editions of the newsletter. Cheers!
